Our approach for responsible business

Taking action for sustainable development

As a large multinational company, Airbus is convinced that promoting responsible business conducts within our value chain is key to sustainable development and growth. Even more, Airbus is determined to also be a driving force to help solving the most challenging societal issues.

"Our approach to Responsibility and Sustainability (R&S) is straightforward, business-oriented and pragmatic. Our R&S demonstrates the ways in which Airbus is embedding long-term value for the benefit of all stakeholders." Airbus CEO Tom Enders

Airbus Materiality assessment

In order to prioritise its responsible and sustainable efforts, Airbus has carried out a materiality assessment in 2017. With the support of consultants, Airbus conducted in-depth interviews with a set of stakeholders representing customers, works councils, local community partners, NGOs, technological partners, investors, airworthiness authorities, MROs, government bodies, suppliers and industry associations.

The materiality matrix, below, is a result of these interviews. Topics considered most material to Airbus by external stakeholders are ranked vertically by importance, while our internal Responsibility & Sustainability Network’s ranking for the same topics is shown on the horizontal axis.

Airbus’ commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals

Airbus has been a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative, since 2003. It serves to align business strategies and operations with universal principles on human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption, and to take actions that advance societal goals.

At the end of 2015, the United Nations defined a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outlining global priorities and aspirations for 2030. The SDGs embrace a universal approach to the sustainable development agenda. They explicitly call on business to use creativity and innovation to address development challenges and recognise the need for governments to encourage sustainability reporting.

Once again, Airbus is proud to embrace this universal agenda defined by the UN. In December 2015, Airbus adopted the SDGs as a framework to align our responsible and sustainable contributions. Throughout 2016, we performed a mapping of our contributions based on the Company’s publicly reported information (website, annual report, press releases). It demonstrated that at least eight of the UN’s 17 SDGs are directly relevant to Airbus’ businesses and stakeholders’ feedback confirmed that we are actively contributing to:
